"Seek the Face of the Lord" (Psalm 27)

Encountering the Lord in Sacred Art

This year’s calendar features the artwork of Madonna House staff artist Helen Hodson. A series of Gospel scenes appear on the following pages. Most are images of Helen’s icons and two months feature her pencil drawings. Beneath the title of each image is the textual location of that episode, followed by a few excerpted lines. The bold quote beneath the excerpt is either a direct translation of Greek phrases appearing in the image or a related (New American Bible, Revised Edition) Scripture verse for further reflection.

Experiencing the Presence of God

“Seek the face of the Lord,” cries the longing heart in Psalm 27. Providentially, this is made possible by the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, through whose humanity is revealed the divine face of God the Father. “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9). All it takes on the part of the faithful is to be present before God. When asked to explain prayer St. John Vianney pointed to the simple insight of one of his parishoners, “I look at God and God looks at me.”

The Gospel narratives are full of such events: Christ’s gaze seeks out another’s in a crowd. The Good Shepherd rejoices after going to great lengths in rescuing a lost sheep. Jesus reaches out to grasp the hand of his sinking disciple and pull him to safety.
It takes an intimate experience of encounter to give focus and meaning to one’s faith, precisely because that faith is no longer built upon esoteric theory but a relationship pulsing with life and passion. This relationship is offered to all who seek out the Lord, such as in the Gospel account of the rich youth, “Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him…” (Mark 10:21). The spark from an encounter with God fuels a lifetime of response to his love, if one dares to choose such a radical path.
